Advent calendar

The advent-season starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. this can be up to 5 weeks before christmas. And endless period of time for a young child longing for christmas. To "reduce" the time (and keep track of it :) ) advent-calendars were introduced.

Originating in the 19th century it was originally only a means to "keep" track of the days till christmas. Today these calendars usually consists of a printed sheet of paper with 24 doors. Behind every door is an image. There are a variety of calendars and some do not 'just' contain images:

The first day of opening the advent calendar is the first of December. It contains 24 doors before the Christmas. The last door to open is on Christmas eve:

In recent years, more and more advent calendars are sold in Europe. A trend that the big brands do not miss. There are a variety of "branded" advent calendars available, e.g. Hello Kitty:
