Sailing in the ocean is an adventure for people who have navigation skills. To reach another island, ships and harbours are important for fishermen and workers who travel across the sea. Does this sound like an adventure? Let's go there!:
Three main harbours that are suitable for heavy transportation ships are Landsort, Sandhamn, and Söderarm. Sandhamn is one of the largets settlements in the Stockholm archipelago, permanent residents: around 100 people!, but more temporary residents and visitors in summer. Once you are there, you may feel like more or less than 30 people on this island. It is one of popular locations for summer vacation in Sweden as you can see many yachts were at the port:
The places where you may find something to drink or dine are in a tavern (not many guests and drinks to offer like bars in the city), a kiosk at the harbour:
You can buy cigarettes, coffee to go and cinnamon rolls for breakfast:
or go to dine at the hotel and restaurant on the sand harbour, called Sandhamn hotel:
The daily lunch menu is displayed in front of the hotel, Swedish meatballs with lingonberry jam and mashed potatos, Köttbullar:
The word "Sandhamn" means sand harbour. Of course, sand is sold to contruction companies or glass factories. Most area of this island is covered with sand, though there is no sand spirit or sandman, only the sandhamn chapel that is built in the forest and on the sand beach:
Interestingly, there is a kind of sand bread (Swedish brown bread with spices) called Limpa bread:
Most inhabitants are fishermen and farmers and the most favorite color is red as it is a sort of traditional swedish houses:
Each family has their own boat (instead of car) parking in boathouses around the island:
There are some small rocky hills on the sand island. This area is quite dense and is suitable to build houses, probably more stable ground than sandy beach:
Our next article maybe "The Islands where no man has gone before". Make your own journey to far away islands or a nice summer sandy beach if you like. Have a safe journey!
